The Spine precinct
The Spine @ PJKita is a community and business centre nestled within Kelana Jaya Park, Petaling Jaya — a shared urban space imagined around people, connection and participation. Its story begins not with a building, but with the community it was created to serve.
Born from PJKita, an MBPJ initiative for inclusive, community-driven public spaces, The Spine was shaped by a spirit of co-creation. Early community engagement — including mural activities with local residents — helped connect people to the place before construction was complete.
Designed by DTLM Design Group under principal architect Ar. Dr. Tan Loke Mun, the project brings together community, commerce and youth-oriented spaces through a continuous, sheltered urban spine.
A covered corridor formed beneath interconnected canopies runs through the site like a spine — linking retail, food, youth and community spaces into one walkable experience.
The Spine @ PJKita uses two distinctive architectural expressions to shape its tropical public realm — the long sheltered butterfly roof of The Spine and the tree-like T-Canopy forms of The Annexe.
A distinctive roof form defines the sheltered pedestrian spine, creating shade and protection from Petaling Jaya's tropical weather while connecting community, business and lifestyle spaces along a continuous walkable route.
Inspired by tropical tree and mushroom forms, the T-Canopy rises from minimal ground contact before spreading overhead. The approach keeps the public realm open and flexible while creating generous shelter and a strong architectural identity.
The architecture responds to Petaling Jaya’s tropical context through shade, shelter, open circulation and adaptive reuse. The canopy and roof systems are intended to manage sun and heavy rainfall while supporting comfortable, naturally connected public spaces.
The Spine is a living structure — designed to connect people, support local enterprise and grow together with the community of Petaling Jaya. Its mission is to nurture a more sustainable, creative and community-driven city for generations to come.
Technical note: the rainwater-harvesting / butterfly-roof wording above is intentionally marked for confirmation. Once final architectural or sustainability documentation is available, we can replace this with precise system details and performance data.
The Spine brings together families, youth, organisations, local businesses and visitors through a changing programme of activities.
Flexible spaces can support community programmes, meetings, activations and events. Booking functionality will be connected in the next build.
Future modules will support tenant and vendor directories, event proposals, space enquiries, registrations and community partnerships from one platform.
Getting Here, Google Maps, parking, opening hours and accessibility information will be connected to verified operational information before launch.
Visitor check-ins are connected to the central Supabase database. Public visitors can submit a check-in while only aggregate statistics are shown publicly.
